Scott Cowcher is a counsellor with more than 30 years of experience across the helping professions in Australia and internationally. His professional background includes psychiatric nursing, mental health, community development, education and adult literacy. Scott brings a compassionate, practical and person-centered approach to his care.

Scott works with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, relationship difficulties, emotional distress and major life transitions..He also alongside members of the LGBTIQA+ community in Australia and overseas. His international experience brings an understanding of being queer through non-western perspectives. Through his practice Scott provides a supportive and non-judgemental therapeutic environment for clients to grow and build resilience..

Areas of Interest

Scott has a particular interest in expatriate transitions and cross-cultural adjustment. He supports individuals, couples and families relocating to or from Australia. Helping to navigate the emotional and practical challenges of adapting to new cultures. As well as changing identities and rebuilding social connections. He also has a special interest in supporting accompanying partners (‘trailing spouses’), who may experience career disruption. As well as loss of professional identity and social isolation in new environments. As he has personally navigated international relocation. Scott, as a parent,  understands the unique experiences and challenges faced by third culture kids and internationally mobile families.

While a consultation with the World Bank Family Network, establishing the Southeast Asia Peer Support Network, Scott developed peer support strategies for individuals, couples and families as they navigated international relocations across the region. Scott also brings his experience of having  and worked in Cambodia, Thailand and the United States to his counselling practice.

Scott also has a strong interest in the psychological aspects of ageing and life transitions. He understands that changes in career, health, identity, relationships and purpose can be challenging and transformative. His counselling supports clients to process the emotions that often accompany these transitions, helping them develop greater self-awareness, resilience and a renewed sense of meaning and direction.

Therapeutic Approach

Scott’s counselling is grounded in person-centered therapy and integrates evidence-based approaches including emotion-focused therapy (EFT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). He tailors therapy to each client’s individual needs, recognising that lasting change comes from understanding and working with emotions as well as developing practical skills for everyday life. Scott believes that a strong therapeutic relationship provides the foundation for healing and growth, and he works collaboratively with clients to deepen emotional awareness, build resilience, clarify their values and create meaningful, lasting change.

Scott Cowcher offers both face-to-face and telehealth counselling and is committed to providing a welcoming, respectful, inclusive and culturally safe environment where every client feels heard, valued and supported.
