Reclaim Your Space | The Importance of Having a Lock on Your Bedroom Door

How often do you think about whether you have a lock on your bedroom door? That little lock (or lack thereof) could be the key to your peace of mind and let you reclaim your space.

Over the years, many clients have share their anxiety about someone—whether a child, a housemate, or even a well-meaning parent—barging into their bedroom unannounced. A minor inconvenience when you’re trying to have private time and/or intimate moments. One client told me how they could not relax in their own bedroom because they never knew when a housemate might walk in without warning. After installing a lock, they described a sense of relief they had not realised they were missing.

This kind of worry is common. The dread of hearing footsteps outside the door or, worse, being interrupted mid-moment, is not awkward—and can impact on the sense of comfort your bedroom may provide. Bedrooms are can be sanctuaries, places to rest, relax, and enjoy intimacy in privacy. But as some people have recognised, a closed door simply is not always good enough to guarantee that.

Reclaim your space

Private space (or time) can assist us to unwind; to have a sense of control of our own space.  It can bring a peace of mind. Privacy is more than avoiding embarrassing situations.  Privacy can contribute to a sense of safety and in turn psychological wellbeing.  — A lock on your bedroom door sets a clear boundary: “This is my space. I decide who enters and when.” It is about reclaiming that sense of control over your environment, especially in shared living situations where boundaries can blur.

If you do not already have a lock, it is time to get one. And if you do have one, do not hesitate to use it. Boundaries are vital, and your privacy is worth protecting.

Reclaim your space and your bedroom as the retreat it should be. Install that lock—or start using the one you have—and take control of your personal space. Do not wait for the next awkward moment to remind you how valuable your privacy is. Take control today and enjoy the comfort and peace of mind that comes with knowing your space is truly yours.

Because, let’s face it—privacy is important.

Enjoy!
